Rita Casper MBA, RN, NCSN discusses her Transitional Opportunities Program (TOPS), a program for students aged 18-22yrs with special needs and she how teaches health to these students.  She presents topics, resources, and challenges as well as outreach to parents. Learning Outcomes
As a result of this 1-hour program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the need for a specialized health curriculum for older students with special needs,
  2. Identify strategies for developing an effective curriculum for this student population,
  3. Identify effective instructional strategies for teaching older students with special needs, and
  4. Describe successes and challenges of teaching health curriculum to this student population.

Presenter:

Rita Casper is the Director of Nursing for Andover Public schools, where she has worked for the past 15 years. In her current role, she oversees nursing services for the entire district as well as the Transitional Opportunities Program (TOPS); which is housed in the central administration office. TOPS is a program for students aged 18-22yrs. with special needs. These are high functioning young adults, primarily with a diagnosis of autism or developmental delay. These individuals expand their life skills with a cohort of students with similar disabilities. Many of them attend college classes at Northern Essex Community College and also develop employment skills in local job placements. 

Rita completed a 4 year nursing program at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in England and later completed her Master’s degree in Business at Simmon’s Graduate School of Management, Boston. She has worked in the nursing field for 38 years, many of those in a management role. Rita has worked in a variety of environments including acute hospital care, community nursing, and the medical practice setting. She also works on weekends as a triage nurse in Urgent Care for Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Boston.
