Student Health- School Nurses & Gun Violence Prevention

Overview:

Robin Cogan, MEd, RN, NCSN, FNASN, FAAN presents on Gun Violense prevention in our schools. She addresses gun violence as a public health issue and how school nurses need to be  involved as public health nurses. Robin discusses the incidence of gun violence impacting our students and strategies to address the issue. This is a presentation from the Summer Academy 2022.

Objectives:

As a result of participating in this educational activity, learners will be able to describe:

  • ●  Why Gun violence is a public health issue and requires a public health approach to solve.

  • ●  Acknowledging that there are many forms of violence in school that do not involve firearms, the focus of today is firearm.

  • ●  School nurses have been first-responders to many forms of violence in school, including firearm violence.

  • ●  School nurses have been asked to participate in violence prevention strategies that may or may not be evidence-based.


Presenter:

 

RC NEW pic Robin Cogan, MEd, RN, NCSN, FNASN, FAAN is a Nationally Certified School Nurse (NCSN), currently in her 22nd year as a New Jersey school nurse in the Camden City School District. Robin is the New Jersey State School Nurses Association Director to the National Association of School Nurses. She is proud to be a Johnson & Johnson School Health Leadership Fellow and past program mentor. Robin is the honored recipient of multiple awards for her work in school nursing and population health. She serves as faculty in the School Nurse Certificate Program at Rutgers University-Camden School of Nursing. Robin writes a popular blog called The Relentless School Nurse. Her extensive work in school nursing was included as a case study in the National Academies of Medicine  Future of Nursing 2030 report. Robin also writes a monthly column in My American Nurse, the official journal of the American Nurses Association.
