Objectives:
Module 1 An Introduction to Asthma Friendly Schools
Objectives – At the end of the module, participants will be able to:
1. Define asthma and identify common asthma triggers.
2. Define how asthma disparities manifest in students through social and structural determinants of health.
3. Identify the connection between asthma and academic outcomes.
4. Recognize the connection between asthma-friendly school environments and the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model
5. Recognize the connection between asthma-friendly school environments and the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice
6. Identify the role of school nurses in asthma-friendly schools
Module 2 Maintaining an Asthma Friendly School: A School Wide Approach
Objectives – At the end of the module, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the approach for creating an asthma-friendly school environment outlined in Clearing the Air: An Asthma Toolkit for Healthy Schools.
2. Identify the necessary supports, tools, and resources for each step to create an asthma-friendly school.
3. Desribe how a policy and practice approach can support school-wide environmental health and safety management.
4. Identify the role and power of school nurses in leading a school-wide environmental health and safety management approach, in collaboration with other school stakeholders.
5. Identify two methods of clinical asthma management in schools: asthma action plans and asthma self-management education. Be able to describe the basics of these methods.
Presenter:
Paula A. Giraldo, BA Paula received her Bachelor of Arts in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Boston University. She is the Program Associate in the Health and Racial Equity Team at Health Resources in Action. She is a people-person, is skilled in project management, logistics, and training development, and provides TA to community-based projects related to environmental health, social determinants of health, and overall public health. Paula was a fellow in the Public Health Associate Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prior to joining HRiA. She also has experience in youth education, research analysis, tenants rights advocacy, and Spanish interpretation. In her spare time, Paula enjoys crocheting, jewelry-making, and baking.
Geraldine Medina, MPH, BA Senior Program Manager in the Health and Racial Equity Team at Health Resources in Action. She is skilled at providing TA and capacity building to community and faith-based organizations related to public health, including COVID- 19, indoor and outdoor Air Quality, asthma, and climate and health. Prior to HRiA, Geri worked in clinical research, including a Boston University (BU) study using a text-based application to address pediatric dental health disparities, and at the Framingham Heart Study. She also worked for a nonprofit that provides FMT treatments for microbiome-mediated diseases and conducts microbiome research. Geri obtained her MPH at BU School of Public Health, with a focus on Environmental Health. Through her studies, she has participated in AQ and water quality monitoring in schools in MA EJ communities, and home inspections for environmental health hazards. She serves on the board of Groundwork Somerville.
