3. Recgonize three barriers to effective collaboration between school nurses and PHNs.
Presenter:
Carilyn Rains, M.Ed, BSN, RN Carilyn Rains has 28 years’ experience in the specialty practice of School Health. She is currently the Director of School Health Services for the Plymouth Public Schools. Before her role in Plymouth, Carilyn spent 6 years in the role of Nursing Supervisor for the Sandwich Public Schools; she also worked for the Marshfield Public Schools as a school nurse at the high school level for 11 years. Prior to entering the specialty field of School Health, Carilyn worked in Women’s Health as a labor and delivery room nurse and childbirth educator for 15 years.
Dr. Erin D. Maughan is an associate professor in the School of Nursing at George Mason University (Mason). She has over 22 years experience working in school health as a frontline school nurse, the state school and adolescent school nurse consultant for the Utah Department of Health, and as a school nurse researcher. As the former Director of Research at the National Association of School Nurses she co-led the development of a national uniform data set for school nurses, identification of school nurse indicators, and the creation of NASN’s original Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice™. Separate from Mason, Dr Maughan is the co-founder and executive director of the Center for School Health Innovation & Quality. The Center focuses on innovative, data-driven practices to meet the current health needs of school-age children; as well as building the capacity of school nursing leaders. Dr. Maughan is certified as an advanced public health nurse; was a Johnson and Johnson School Health Fellow, and is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellow alumni (2013 cohort). Dr Maughan is a Fellow in the National Academy of School Nurses and American Academy of Nursing. Her career is dedicated to children’s health, especially vulnerable populations.
Devon Donovan, MMSc is the Regional Epidemiologist for the Southern Plymouth County Public Health Excellence Collaborative, where she provides epidemiological support to six municipalities in southeastern Massachusetts. Trained in data analysis, health communication, and public health surveillance, Devon focuses on infectious disease outbreak and response within her communities. She is also an active member of the Massachusetts Regional Epidemiologist Collaborative and MA Data Release, Presentation, Access, Suppression, and Sharing (DRPASS) workgroup. Devon has experience leading numerous prevention programs, digital health campaigns, and completed her graduate thesis on vaccine misinformation on social media. Devon is dedicated to advancing health data modernization and precision public health efforts; focused on making public health information clear, actionable, and community centered. She holds a Master of Medical Science in Public Health Epidemiology from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
