Dr. Bultas is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Saint Louis University Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing, and Amy Wehr is a school nurse leader who currently supports 45 school nurses in West St. Louis County area in Missouri. They discuss temperature assessment, the science, the equipment and accuracy, and the best practices for temperature assessment in the school setting during COVID and beyond. Objectives:
- Identify types of thermometers used in schools for illness assessment
- Identify types of thermometers used for surveillance
- Describe criteria for evaluating thermometers (accuracy, cost, ease of use – time, location, developmental stage, safety)
- Identify conditions that decrease the accuracy of thermometers
- Describe recommendations for using temperature to make decisions about school attendance (e.g. taking at home by parents/guardians, using most accurate thermometer available in school)
