Identify key components of a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan and evaluate their school’s current cardiac readiness.

2. Describe strategies for leading effective cardiac emergency drills that improve staff confidence and rapid response.

3. Recognize collaboration methods with administrators, athletic staff, and first responders to strengthen cardiac emergency preparedness.


Presenter:

Matthew Hickling, MSN, APRN, CPNP-PC is a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with a diverse background in nursing leadership, developmental pediatrics, school health, and acute pediatric care. He currently serves as Medical Director for a school district in New York State, where he leads system-wide initiatives to improve student health, emergency preparedness, chronic disease management, and special education services. Under his leadership, the district earned Project ADAM Heart Safe School designation and implemented a full suite of evidence-based health protocols.

Matthew began his career in pediatric intensive care, oncology, and emergency medicine before expanding into developmental-behavioral pediatrics and leadership. He also provides clinical care for children with ADHD, Autism, and complex behavioral health needs, while also bridging gaps between medical systems, schools, and community resources.

A passionate educator and mentor, Matthew teaches at Russell Sage College and Maria College and has guided future nurse leaders through academic and clinical roles. He serves on the Board of Directors for the New York State Association of School Nurses (NYSASN) and presents nationally on school health innovation, leadership, workforce development, developmental pediatrics, and emergency response planning.

Matthew’s work is grounded in collaboration, compassion, and advocacy. He is dedicated to empowering nurses to lead system-wide change.
