FREE Developing a Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) in your School
Overview:This online program will provide the school nurse with the tools and skills to develop and sustain a medical emergency response team in their own school. Resources and forms are available to begin the process. The program concludes with an opportunity for the participant to create and plan a timeline for the process. Cathryn Hampson BSN, is a nationally certified school nurse, a certified instructor for CPR/ AED/First Aid and a thirty-year veteran of the nursing career. She is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science in Nursing in Nursing Education through St. Joseph College of Maine. Objectives:
- Explain the purpose of a Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) in their school.
- Explain how to establish and maintain that team.
- Describe the role of the school nurse as an emergency response leader within the school setting and as a leader of the MERT team.
- Develop a plan to begin the process of creating a team in their own school.
Presenter:
Cathryn Hampson is a nationally certified school nurse, a certified instructor for CPR/ AED/First Aid and a thirty-year veteran of the nursing career. She is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science in Nursing in Nursing Education through St. Joseph College of Maine. Cathryn’s background is in maternal-child health, cross cultural healthcare and school nursing. She has worked in hospital, community and school settings in a variety of locations such as a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, various locations in South America, and New England. Her last twenty years have been devoted to school nursing with her current elementary school nurse position at Spaulding Memorial School in Townsend, Massachusetts. As a school nurse she is committed to lifelong learning, managing a school health office that meets the various medical and social emotional needs of her students, collaborating with district staff, community supports and students families to promote student success, and offering opportunities for staff training throughout the district in health, safety and emergency preparedness. Cathryn is an active member of the school community; participating on school and district committees for professional development, safety, Extended Learning and negotiations.
Cathryn resides near the base of Mount Monadnock in Jaffery, New Hampshire and is a proud wife and mother of four children.

The School Health Academy provides these continuing education hours through Northeastern University School of Nursing. Northeastern University School of Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC’s) commission on accreditation.Participants successfully completing this program will receive a statement of credit for contact hours.
