Assessment of Common Orthopedic Injuries in Schools

Overview:

1 TyleeTylee Schraufnagel, MS, ATC, Chelsea Public Schools’s Athletic Trainer discusses common orthopedic injuries school nurses may see in the school setting.  She discusses injuries of the hand, elbow, shoulder, knee and ankle.  Tylee also presents what needs immediate assessment and other treatments. This presentation was given on August 7, 2024 at the NEUSHA Summer Academy.

Objectives:

After the presentation, the viewer should be able to:

1.  Describe the 4 main tissue types in the orthopedic realm (Bone, ligament, muscle/tendon, vascular/nerve)
2.  Recognize the assessments to rule in or rule out involvement of different tissues
3.  Identify involvement of tissues in terms of “suspicion” (low vs moderate vs high)
4.  Recognize the mechanism of Injury (can be used to narrow down involved tissues)


Presenter:

1 Tylee Tylee Schraufnagel, MS, ATC received her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology- Athletic Training from the University of Wisconsin and her master’s degree in Human Physiology- Athletic Training from Boston University. She also completed a Residency in Neurotrauma and Spine at BU before becoming the full-time athletic trainer at Chelsea Public Schools in 2017. She works closely with the nursing staff in the Chelsea, MA public school district and has a passion for interprofessional collaboration and community health.
