Presenter:

Dr. Jenny Gormley has worked in the School Health specialty in Massachusetts since 2000, providing direct care as a per diem and elementary school nurse in two Massachusetts (MA) School districts, and as Director of Health, Nursing, and Safety at a pre-K-12 school in a third school district, managing the staff of school nurses and physical and health education teachers, as well as leading safety, wellness and the McKinney-Vento homeless efforts.   In her roles in the school settings, she taught human growth and development for 5th and 6th graders, supported educators with curriculum mapping, and learned much from the Curriculum Directors, Principals, and teachers about what quality classroom teaching looks like.

Since 2015, Jenny has developed continuing education programs for school nurses within the Northeastern University School of Nursing School Health Academy.   Earlier in her career, Jenny worked as a registered nurse with adults with acute and chronic cardiac and pulmonary diseases, with a focus on helping patients manage their conditions and treatment plans through health teaching and exercise. Taking an “upstream” approach,  Jenny shifted her focus to the prevention and management of health conditions in children and adolescents in schools.

In her doctoral program, Jenny implemented a quality improvement project to teach and access a brief educational activity designed to increase school nurse advocacy for students in their local school communities.
