Dr. Amy Gaesser, Assistant Professor, State University of New York at Brockport, shared research on a non-pharmacological strategy that can be used to reduce anxiety among staff and students in schools. Her presentation expands on NEUSHA’s online program, Anxiety in Youth and Use of Emotional Freedom Technique.

Objectives:
As a result of this 90-minute educational activity, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify what is known about the prevalence of anxiety in school-aged youth in the U.S./worldwide.
  2. Identify the underlying neurobiological pathways related to anxiety.
  3. Define tapping/EFT.
  4. Identify resources & studies that support use of tapping/EFT in school-aged youth.
  5. Learn steps for using EFT to reduce anxiety

Presenter:

Dr. Gaesser is currently an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at The College at Brockport, State University of New York. She received her PhD in Counselor Education with a concentration in Gifted Education from the University of Connecticut, her Masters in Counselor Education from SUNY Brockport, and her Bachelor of Science in Social Work with a minor in Religious Studies from Nazareth College of Rochester. She is a Mental Health Counselor-LP, a certified New York State School Counselor, and a Nationally Certified Counselor with more than 25 years of experience in mental health and academia, specializing in stress and anxiety management. Her research includes the social and emotional well-being of gifted students, and interventions to reduce stress and anxiety for children and adolescents, including the efficacy of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). She publishes and presents at national, regional, and local levels on the effective use of EFT for stress and anxiety management, the neurological and cognitive impacts of stress and anxiety, and the unique needs of high-ability youth. She is also actively engaged with professional counseling organizations and serves as a Fellow for the Yunasa summer camps which support the balanced development of the five aspects of self for gifted youth.
